Toyota projects that it will sink into its first yearly operating loss in 70 years for the fiscal year ending March 31. Workers who, by law, are guaranteed lifetime employment with Toyota will be asked to take a paycut. Chrysler may not survive the first quarter this year ... I doubt that they will be able to be as creative as Toyota.

Toyota is exercising creativity to get through this tough time. The U.S. Steel industry is now joining the auto companies in line at Capitol Hill. But they are not in line for a handout, per se. They will be asking that the government deal with the slowdown through a recovery program that has a 'buy American clause' in every provision. That is obviously not the best way to approach the recession for Americans, but this creativity certainly is for that particular lobby.

On a micro level, how do we supplement the stiffer requirement that we just plain work harder? Well ... begin by making more of an effort to brand yourself. Make yourself more valuable and visible to your customers. Be more confident in your value.

Focus on your most profitable niches in your industry ...become the "go to"
salesperson in your marketplace.  Sell the value product lines that stay sold ...
the high quality products that help to cut your customer's costs, so they can
be more profitable.  Establish your value and publicize it within each customer.
In this way, you become an important part of their team effort in the midst of
this tough economic time.
