Hot is what's Cool

The Watt-Flex® cartridge heaters give us choices and one of the coolest choices is the hot tip. When the split sheath cartridge heater is formed, it maintains its concentration of coil at the tip of the heater. The watt density that is found in the profile of the heater can be maintained around the tip.

This is especially helpful in a number of applications: gate probe tips for injection molding, branding and serial number heads, heated punches and other requirements for very localized heat. Depending on the watt density of the heated tip, it may be necessary to insure that the tip is positioned against the end of the bore to cause the heat to be drawn away from the tip of the heater. The shape of the end of the bore may be flat or the beveled shape of a drill bit.

The hot tip is unique to the split sheath cartridge heater design and cannot be supplied in a conventional heater design. Please visit the Dalton Electric website for more info:

If the bore is open or the heat cannot be pulled off the end of the heater, a cool tip is the preferred design. This is achieved by simply stretching the resistance coil at the tip of the heater, which reduces the watt density at the tip (top heater in picture above). If a hot tip is specified and contact with the end of the bore cannot be assured, heat could build up on the tip of the heater, causing premature failure. When in doubt, go with the cool tip ... but use the hot tip as a strong sales feature when the requirement exists.

Friday Funnies ...but not so funny today.
