| Where is the Economy Headed? Whispers about a business downturn affect us all. In the month of December unemployment jumped to 5.0%, from 4.7% at the end of November. A healthy portion of that was from the construction sector, as the housing market continues to slide. To get a good idea of where we might be headed, we can turn to a 17 January address by new Fed Chair Ben Bernanke: "In the business sector, investment in equipment and software appears to have been sluggish
in the fourth quarter, while nonresidential construction grew briskly. In light of the softening in
economic activity and the adverse developments in credit markets, growth in both types of
investment spending seems likely to slow in coming months. Outside the United States,
however, economic activity in our major trading partners has continued to expand vigorously.
U.S. exports will likely continue to grow at a healthy pace in coming quarters, providing some
impetus to the domestic economy." ![]() What does this mean to us? Bernanke is predicting slowing in the growth, but feels that the U.S. economy will enjoy moderate growth. That's fine on the macro level, but how does it translate to our micro level? Well, it means that the opportunities will still be there. And any belt-tightening will mean an opportunity for products that will save on the cost of production; cut the cost of process heating, last longer ... all the benefits of the Watt-Flex® cartridge heater that we have discussed in this newsletter. We are hoping that 2008 represents a solid year for you and your company and we look
forward to a year of providing the support that will contribute to your success.
Friday Funnies - True Story!!!
The ad read: "OLDS 1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don't love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet." She received more than 70 telephone calls from emergency room technicians, nurses, school counselors and even a Georgia man who wanted to congratulate her. The only critic is her son who claims the alcohol was left by a passenger. The mother believes mercy isn't the best policy in this case. She said she set two rules: No booze and always keep it locked. She decided to run the ad for another week -- just for the feedback. |
