Generally, conventional cartridge heaters that are longer than six or seven inches have two or more resistance coils wired in parallel to two pins, extending down the center of the heater. A couple of weeks ago we discussed the uneven heat rendered by this construction and the great advantage that the Watt-Flex® cartridge heater has in the way of even temperature profile.
The advantage of the continuous coil of the Dalton Electric Watt-Flex cartridge heater is that it is simply one big resistor that creates an even temperature profile. If there are two sections of coil, one can open and leave half of the heater cold. If the thermocouple that monitors the heat is near the section that is still heating, the poor machine operator can't figure why he can't get good parts. The continuous coil of the Watt-Flex heater is either on or off. If, at the end of the heaters life, it opens, the entire heater is off. If the conventional heater is wired in series with other cartridges, it will continue the process with one section heating, and the absence of the other producing a big cold spot in the process. The Watt-Flex heater will queue the operator to replace the heater as the series will be incomplete, offering further process control.
Friday Funnies A preacher was completing a temperance sermon; with great expression he said, "If I had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river." With even greater emphasis he said, "And if I had all the wine in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river." And then finally, he said, "And if I had all the whiskey in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river." He sat down. The song leader then stood very cautiously and announced with a smile, "For our closing song, let us sing Hymn # 365: "Shall We Gather at the River."
