| Predictive Maintenance I read a great article on-line today about Predictive Maintenance and it got me thinking about the impact of the use of Watt-Flex® cartridge heaters and Maintenance Scheduling. More than likely, the most common Maintenance Scheduling that we confront is Reactive Maintenance, which employs the Run-to-Failure approach. This is simply letting a system run until something breaks ... when the heater goes, replace it. Preventive Maintenance is the next most aggressive form. This is Maintenance performed on a regular schedule to extend the life of the equipment. While Maintenance is scheduled after elapsed calendar time or machine run time, heater replacement is often still on a run-to-failure basis. The real benefit here is the record keeping ... now heater life is being tracked and the Plant Engineering Dept. will have a pretty good handle on the benefits of using a superior heater. Predictive maintenance utilizes the tracking of key indicators over time to predict when equipment will need repair or experience failure. Equipment is measured on a regular basis for prediction of repair cycles and heater groups will be replaced when one heater fails or they will be automatically replaced on a scheduled basis. This allows greater control for purchasing and stocking. It also brings focus to bear on the benefits of the Watt-Flex heater: longer life, greater reliability, ease of replacement and reduced machine down time.
