| Predictive Maintenance (contd) Last week we discussed customer use of Preventive and Predictive Maintenance techniques. The article that I read, that caused me to focus on these concepts, launched into a discussion of Cost of Failure as analyzed by factoring unplanned downtime cost variables. I was impacted by the similarity between their analysis(lost revenue during downtime, repair costs, replacement costs, cost of scrap, etc.) and our justification for using Watt-Flex® cartridge heaters based on Costof Heating (vs. price of the heater). Success with cartridge heaters is achieved with analytical consideration of the costs of heating. One time I secured a blanket contract by projecting the life of a Watt-Flex heater against the life of a conventional heater and justified the price increase with a decrease in annual expenditure. As it worked out, the Watt-Flex heaters lasted longer than my projection and the justification was that much easier for the next year.
The justification can be enhanced with factoring in reduced operating costs through more efficient heat transfer, reduced routine maintenance costs (fewer changeouts due to longer life) and considerably reduced changeout costs from elimination of bore seizure. A more analytical sales approach can be most effective, depending on the level of understanding of company goals ofthe maintenance folks on whom you call.
Friday Funnies An English professor wrote the words: "A woman without her man is nothing" on the chalkboard and asked his students to punctuate it correctly.
