In Heat, But Under Control

I borrowed the title for this piece from a distributor coffee mug ... I always enjoyed that tongue-in-cheek statement !!! We have had a few questions about thermocouples lately, so I would like to review our benefits. Our thermocouple option is ideal for the general applications where the t/c is the first component to fail.

In a uniquely patented process, Dalton Electric provides a groove for a needle-type thermocouple within the diameter of the heater. The thermocouple is .040" diameter and up to 15" long for a 1/4" diameter heater and .062" diameter for a 3/8" (to 15" long) and 1/2" (to 7" long) diameter heater. For 1/2" diameter heaters longer than 7" and all larger diameter heaters, an .040" t/c is inserted into a center groove. Thermocouples can be provided as Type "J" or "K".

The above picture shows the thermocouple and heater placed in a bore with an oval window for observation. The use of this construction provides three major benefits to the user:

1. The thermocouple is independently replacable.
2. The t/c measures the heat being transferred to the host metal ... not an internal coil temperature as in a conventional design.
3. The t/c can monitor the temperature anywhere along the profile of the heater, depending on insertion ... conventional heaters have fixed position t/c's.

This flexibility opens more options for the user, greater temperature control and reduction of maintenance and machine down-time.
