The Lone Wrangler Rides Again

For
the third consecutive year I had the pleasure of participating
in the “MS180”,
the largest fundraising event in North America for Multiple
Sclerosis. This event
consists of a two day, 180-mile bicycle ride from Houston to
Austin, TX. For
avid cyclists like myself, the ride serves as good early season
base miles, for others
it is an accomplishment they will talk about for the rest of
their lives.
I look forward
to this event every year because the Texas countryside is so
beautiful in Mid April. This year we were a little too early
for the peak of the Blue
Bonnets; the Texas state flower, which form oceans of blue
in the rural fields. But
this did not take away from the beauty of the landscape with
Texas longhorn cattle
ranches, and enthusiastic locals who come out to cheer the
riders on.
The first 100 miles went by very quickly and took us
to the overnight stop at the
Lagrange County Fair Ground. Here volunteers provided every
amenity including
hot showers and large sleeping tents, a Texas-style Barbecue
and live entertainment.
Following a “hot off the grill” pancake breakfast
for 10,000 riders in mind-boggling
efficiency we were off for day two.
An invitation from a friend to join his company sponsored team
brought me to the
ride three years ago, but what keeps me coming back is the MS charity
itself. It
is a wonderful organization that is passionate about their work.
The MS foundation funds massive research projects in search for
a cure for this devastating disease. In addition, the foundation
works with individuals living with MS to improve their quality
of life.
A few sore muscles at the beginning of day
two reminded me of the previous day's
100 miles, but this was short lived as the company of many close
friends made the
miles go by very quickly. Soon the cityscape came into view and
the crowds grew as we rode through the University of Texas and
onto the steps of the State Capital
and the finish line.
Each year in early March, I launch my fundraising campaign and
am always encouraged by my personal sponsors, who continue to grow
in both number and financial support.
Diseases like MS remind us that “good health” is fragile
condition and participating in this
event reminds me of how fortunate I am to be in the best of health.
Friday Funnies
A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption.
One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named "Amal".
The other goes to a family
in Spain; they name him "Juan".
Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his Mom. Upon
receiving the picture, she
tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Amal.
Her husband responds, "But they are twins! If you've seen
Juan, you've seen Amal."
