| Patriots Day This week we have been twice asked, "What is Patriots Day in Massachusetts?" Well, on last Monday it was the annual early RedSox game in which we clubbed Texas and the running of the 111th Boston Marathon ... first run in 1897. And it was a day of anticipation for our Boston Bruins going into Game 7 of the playoffs (they got pummeled by Montreal on Tuesday). But Patriots Day is actually a celebration of the anniversary of the march by the British troops garrisoned in Boston to Concord, where it was rumored that the rebels had a store of arms. The lanterns were hung in the Old North Church (one if by land, two if by sea) ... do you know which it was? The British boarded the longboats rather than march around the southern land mass, so it was two lanterns. Revere, Prescott and Dawes were off on horseback to warn the Minutemen.
On the morning of 19 April,1776 the British were met by a group of 77 American soldiers on the Lexington Green. They were brought together by the presence of Sam Adams and John Hancock in Lexington and had been readying themselves at Buckman's Tavern on the Green. 700+ Lobsterbacks marched onto the Green and ordered the rebels to disperse. Volleys were exchanged, 8 colonists lay dead and the militia scattered.
Eventually the British reached the Old North Bridge at Concord and were soundly repulsed and driven back to Boston, suffering constant harassment by snipers hiding behind every tree and rock. Reenactments, like the one shown above, thrill audiences every year on the Lexington Green to begin this day of celebration of the battles leading to our nation's independence.
![]() A man named Larry owned a small farm in Galt, CA. The California State Wage & Hour Department claimed he was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an agent out to interview him. "I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them," demanded the agent. "Well," replied Larry, "there's my farm hand who's been with me for 3 years. I pay him $200 a week plus free room and board. The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $150 per week plus free room and board. Then there's the half-wit who works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night. He also sleeps with my wife occasionally." "That's the guy I want to talk to - the half-wit," says the agent. "That would be me," replied Larry. |
