There are three techniques that are added to a Watt-Flex® cartridge heater to control its insertion into a bore ... other than additions to the end of a heater which restrict further insertion (headers, clip support,etc.). The first two serve a additional role of fastening the heater to the heat sink if desired. The flange is round and notched for fastening. It is TIG welded to the heater at three points on one leg to allow for expansion in the bore of the other leg. Dimensions are shown on the web page: http://www.daltonelectric.com/cartridge-heater/Watt-Flex-Heater-Accessories.htm#HeaterMounting
The second option is a mounting bracket. It is an "L" shaped bracket that is welded to one leg of the heater. Lower profile than the flange, the mounting bracket is also notched to allow mechanical fastening to the heat sink. The final insertion stop technique is the addition of a bead of weld to the outside of the sheath. This serves to position the heater in the bore so over insertion will not expose heated section at the other end of the bore.
Friday Funnies During a commercial airline flight, a Navy pilot was seated next to a young mother with a babe in arms. When the baby began crying during the descent for landing, the mother began nursing the infant as discreetly as possible. The pilot pretended not to notice and, upon disembarking, he gallantly offered his assistance to help with the various baby-related impedimenta. When the young mother expressed her gratitude, the pilot responded, 'Gosh, that's a good looking baby, and he sure was hungry!' Somewhat embarrassed, the mother explained that her pediatrician said nursing would help alleviate the pressure in the baby's ears. The Navy pilot sadly shook his head, and, in true pilot fashion, exclaimed, 'And all these years, I've been chewing gum.'
