Failure to Success

Failure results in what? When Dalton Electric has a heater returned, a thorough autopsy examination is performed on it. It is dissected, tested, examined and fired up (if possible) to determine the reason for failure. As we pointed out in past "TGID" Newsletters, the primary reason for failure is contamination. Where do we go from there?

Often times, the fix has to do with a recommendation to the customer that they make a change to eliminate the problem: stop the dripping oil, eliminate a set screw that is preventing the heater from expanding in the bore or perforating a wire channel to eliminate an oven effect.

But the approach that we must often take is a recognition that Dalton must add something or change something to accommodate a customer "problem" or condition. Lots of contamination? ...

We can ceramic pott the terminal cavity to prevent contamination from entering the heater (shown right). Over temp. on the lead wires? ... Apply a higher temperature sleeve or higher temp. rated wire.

Machine cycling causing lead wire failure? ... Bump the thickness of the leads or apply a clip support. Heater working out of the bore during machine operation? ... Add a flange or mounting bracket to anchor the heater in the bore. The important thing to remember is that the problem can't always be fixed by the customer ... get the heater back to us and we will determine what can be done to fix the problem. Now we've gone from failure to success.

Dispatcher: 9-1-1 What's the nature of your emergency?

Caller: My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart

Dispatcher: Is this her first child?
