| Heat Distribution Occasionally we will be confronted with an application in which the distribution of heat over the length or width of a workpiece is not even. The customer needs an even temperature profile and asks us to fix it. Examples can be a heat seal bar, a heated platen for sealing covers to boxes or large dies used to laminate plastic stock to other materials. The use of Watt-Flex® cartridge heaters often will correct uneven heat distribution because they have a substantially more even heat profile as compared with a conventional heater. However, to compensate for the inequity of heat profile, we can supply a distributed wattage heater.
This is accomplished by designing different densities of coil along the full length of the continuous resistance coil in the heater. Generally, more heat is assigned to the extremities of the heater to compensate for radiant heat loss off the sides of a platen or off the ends of a sealing bar. How much wattage in each area ...that is the trick and we will address that next week.
