Contamination Continued...

Last week we read about environmental contamination providing the #1 source of heater
failure. On the orange Warning Sheet that accompanies every order, we warn against another contamination source ... one that is not environmental.

The Watt-Flex® cartridge heater expands in a bore for wall-to-wall contact with the bore and conduction heat transfer, which is the best transfer medium. Conventional heaters do not make contact with a bore as there must be a small difference in I.D. of the bore and O.D. of the heater for ease of insertion and removal. Therefore, the use of a heat transfer substance is often encouraged. This may also serve as an anti-seize material.

This material comes in two forms: Magnesium Oxide (a cartridge heaters insulation material) suspended is a liquid and a metalic based substance in a semi-viscous format. They basically "accomplish the mission", but will act as a contaminate if they are introduced to the wires and terminal end of the heater.

When the heater is coated with the substance and inserted into the bore as shown above, the heat transfer substance spews out of the end of the bore.

Cartridge heater contamination can be caused by anti-seize material

If this is carefully removed before the heater is thoroughly inserted, it may be O.K. If the heater has a header, when it is inserted, the substance is forced into the header and sits ready to provide a short to ground.

Best Bet:
Use a Watt-Flex cartridge heater and avoid the heat transfer / anti-seize substances.

Friday Funnies

A group was touring London, marveling at the historic buildings, art collections, and such.
The group included people from many countries. During the tour of the Tower of London,
a man from Prague and another man from Athens struck up a conversation about some
point in history.

A small disagreement ensued, which rapidly became a large one. They decided to settle the matter then and there using the historical accouterments at hand. Donning armor and chain mail, they prepared for a battle. This attracted the attention of the rest of the tour group, who crowded around for a better look. Inasmuch as the combatants were in period dress, the people couldn't tell one from another.

"Is that the Czech wearing the armor?" asked one tourist.

"No," replied another, "The Greek is in the armor. The Czech is in the mail."

INCREDIBLE SCIENCE PORTRAYAL OF THE UNIVERSE

Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida has put up a very interesting page on their site. It begins as a view of the Milky Way Galaxy viewed from a distance of 10 million light years and then zooms in towards Earth in powers of ten. 10 million, to one million, to 100,000 light years and then it finally reaches the top of a large Oak tree, and then it zooms in even further, into the inner structure of a single leaf. Once you click on the site, the software does all the work ... enjoy !!!
