Insertion Stop

Cartridge heaters are insertion heaters; inserted into the workpiece and, consequently, most efficient because they put their heat right where you want it. But sometimes we need to control insertion by adding an accessory to the heater.

The 05/01/2009 issue of TGID talked about insertion stops: bead of weld, flange and mounting bracket:

The positioning of the insertion stop can be controlled from either side of the heater. The position specification may be either A = ? (distance from the terminal end of the heater to the back of the insertion obstruction surface) or B = ? (distance from the tip of the heater to the obstructing surface). So, if the dimension is A = 1/2", the stop will be 1/2" from the terminal end of the heater.

Two considerations when positioning the stop are heater tolerance and cold terminal end. If the "A" dimension is used, the tolerance of the heater length will be located in the bore. You must be sure that a heater at the longest end of its length tolerance will not extend out of the bore. But if the "B" dimension is used, the insertion will be fixed at that dimension (i.e. B = 10" will provide exactly 10" insertion into the heat sink.

The length tolerance will be outside the bore ... a 21" heater will have a tolerance of +/- 3/8" outside the bore. This could be a problem if the design does not allow for the extra space required by that tolerance. The other consideration is that no heated section be outside of the heatsink. If the "B" dimension on this heater is 20" with 1" outside the bore, the length tolerance must be considered and the cold terminal section must be at least 1-3/8". Be sure to fill in your Dalton Sales contact if you have any question about this design procedure.

DEATH
While walking along the sidewalk in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his collar wilt. Apparently, his 5-year-old son and his playmates had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a small box and cotton batting, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased.

The minister's son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version of what he thought his father always said: 'Glory be unto the Faaather, and unto the Sonnn, and into the hole he goooes.' (I want this line used at my funeral!)

SCHOOL
A little girl had just finished her first week of school. 'I'm just wasting my time,' she said to her mother. 'I can't read, I can't write, and they won't let me talk!'

BIBLE
A little boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at it. What he saw was an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages.

'Mama, look what I found,' the boy called out.

'What have you got there, dear?'

With astonishment in the young boy's voice, he answered, 'I think it's Adam's underwear!'
