SMARTT

from Scott Watkins

With the year winding down and 2010 only days away, this is the time when many of us start reflecting on the past year and planning for the next. Did 2009 turn out as you expected? Was business as successful as you hoped or more challenging than you feared? Was there anything you could have done this year to change how things turned out? Writing goals for 2010 will keep you on track to control what you can, focus your efforts and guide your progress throughout the year.

One common goal setting system uses the acronym SMART that stands for:
Specific Measurable Achievable/Realistic Timely

Specific goals are not broad ones such as “Make more money”. Better examples would be “Earn 10% more income by the end of the year” or “Find 3 new customers each month”

Measurable goals involve something quantifiable that can be tracked like income, profit, or new customers.

Achievable and Realistic go hand in hand. Setting an unrealistic goal of doubling your company’s profit margins will never be achievable. Why not start with “increase the bottom line by 2% in the first quarter, and 3% in the second”?

Timely is the most important because if there is no deadline or benchmark for attaining them, the tendency will be to brush them off until the end of the year.

I like to add a second “T” to the acronym. Tangible. If your list of goals is not tangible-written down, printed out and visible - it will be forgotten until next year at this time. Try posting them aside your monitor, inside your briefcase or on the sun visor in the car. True success comes from a balanced life so don’t focus only on work either. Make a separate list for personal and family goals. Great examples there include “Go camping with the family in July” or “Take at least one snowboarding lesson in January”

Wishing you great success in 2010.

Friday Funnies

A husband and wife are shopping in their local Wal-Mart. The husband picks up a case of Budweiser and puts it in their cart.

'What do you think you're doing?' asks the wife.

'They're on sale, only $10 for 24 cans,' he replies.

'Put them back, we can't afford them,' demands the wife, and so they carry on shopping.

A few aisles further on along the woman picks up a $20 jar of face cream and puts it in the basket.

'What do you think you're doing?' asks the husband.

'Its my face cream. It makes me look beautiful,' replies the wife.

Her husband retorts: 'So does 24 cans of Budweiser and it's half the price..'

On the PA system: 'Cleanup on aisle 25, we have a husband down.'
