Christmas Stories

I've been a story teller for years and, for that reason, I particularly love this time of the year. The Christmas season is so full of wonderful stories that my parents read to me in my youth,stories that appear on T.V. and in the movies and stories that recreate the incidents of these weeks in past years that we all hold dear.

I begin with a great Christmas story: "The Gift of the Magi" by  William Sydney Porter (you'll recognize his pen name-- O. Henry). It is the magic story of true giving ... a gold watch sold to buy a beautiful hair comb and hair shorn to purchase a platinum watch fob. O. Henry spins a marvelous tale that brings us to the true spirit of giving. Another favorite is A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Again we have magic of the visitation of the ghosts of Past, Present and Future and again, we are led to the true spirit of giving.

Whether it be How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss, The Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moore, The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg (I couldn't read that to my kids without tearing up) or It's a Wonderful Life with Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed, every one of these stories shares two things: Magic and Giving. And those are the two elements that make this a special time for me ... and all of us.

I am a Christian and I believe in another story that took place 2000 years ago but is still shared and revered today. And it has the two elements of all my other great stories: Magic and Giving. The magic is that this little child, born in a stable became the One Solitary Life that impacted the life of man on this earth more powerfully than all the armies that have marched and the kings that have reigned. And the giving in this story resides in the sacrifices made throughout his life.

Regardless of your beliefs, this is a story for all of us. The spirit of this season causes me to stop and give thanks for the blessings of health, happiness and success. Our company flourishes and we are able to provide for employees as well as people beyond the scope of our company in a variety of ways. And shortly my wife and I will be able to hug our two grown children (24 & 25 years old) as they come home for Christmas. And, again,the stories will be told.
